Cost of living is high but I've heard a lot of them waste it on the pokies. Also the government allows people with high level of assets to get pension because otherwise it gets silly eg You earn/have an extra $10 and you lose $10 in pension and you can't force the oldies to sell their $800 000 house they bought real cheap back in 1930 because its too difficult to readjust to somewhere else.

Absolutely. It is a generalisation to say " a lot of them waste it on the pokies". Maybe a few do but they would be the minority not the majority.
I don't play pokies or buy raffle or lottery tickets don't smoke, drink or do drugs so I find it highly offensive to hear some idiot politician on 1000s of $ a week having a go at pensioners.
I worked even before I left school, volunteered for the Red Cross and Meals on Wheels, paid taxes, served in the Australian Army and raised 4 children for this Nation. I did my bit for Australia.
Do I deserve to live above the poverty line? Damn straight I do and so do all our pensioners.
My house belongs to a community housing association, I have never been able to afford my own. I pay my rent, my bills and try and buy groceries on the pittance from the Government. Step into my shoes and see how you cope.
The pension is also means tested so it goes down in relation to what assets you and your partner own.
when it's a toss up between medication and food , i would say yes ,they do .u can't just lump every body into the same category, not all pensioners are in the same situation .and that house they bought "cheap "in 1930 they worked hard for many years to pay for ,wages were lower as well.i think u need to do some research and get some facts.
Yes they do, why not, women who have a baby get $5000 when its born, so why cant we help them, and when they had kids they didn't get any money to start a family, they served our country respect them!
