I've read on countless sites that cable movements aren't really mass builders, they're more for just the pump and definition and all.
what about cable curls? and overhead cable curls? and tricep pushdowns? can they be used as mass builders? i mean, ain't the cable curls same as the barbell curls, just that it probably as more tension?
same goes for the overhead cable curls, tricep pushdowns and pretty much all cable exercises. are they only for definition or can it be mass builders as well?
please help me out guys. i needa know so that my workout's not going wrong. I wanna gain as much muscle mass as possible for now.

Yes, any resistance training can build muscle. You just have to use enough resistance to stimulate muscle growth. Also make sure you eat more calories than you burn, and to take in enough protein. Daily, you should get at least .7g of protein for each you pound you weigh.
@ Tony: I bet no Mr. Olympia or Mr. Universe ever got to be that big without steroids, either. And you get toned and defined muscles by dropping body fat to a low percentage, not cable exercises.

Yes, they do build muscle. They are the second best tool in the gym to use. Free-weights being the best. What cable exercises don't do as good as free weights is use stabilizer muscles as much. However, cable exercises do use some, whereas machine don't hardly as much.
I've been working out for years, and attribute many gains to cable machines.
You should make sure your workout starts with free weights, then cable stations, and then machine if possible. This way you tire out those smaller stabilizer muscles first.

No !! They can be used to define and tone muscle that "you already have" but can not and will not build muscle. Building muscle means tearing the muscle cells, then through diet and rest they rebuild and get bigger. And there's no ifs, ands or buts about it. No Mr. Olympia or Mr. Universe ever, and I mean EVER got big on cables or machines. Anybody who tells you different is still curling those little girly dumbbells. There's only one way to get big and that is to lift big, think big and use free weights. Period.
Bodybuilding is about going to battle with your own body. The different exercises in the gym are your weapons. The key words to remember are VARIETY and INTENSITY. Especially when you have not seen much strength gains after a few weeks of doing an exercise, its time to change it up. A lot of bodybuilders are constantly changing things up to shock the body. Some every week. I have gone on youtube for every muscle and looked up the various exercises. I try to mix it up. There is a little bit of a learning curve when you have never done an exercise. I just use light weight and pyramid up until I have the feel of it.
