My cat never vomits but cats are known for vomitting like 5 times or more throughout the day, so is it normal that the worst my cat has done was coughed up a very small hairball before?
It depends on the kitty of course, but I would say that any cat vomiting five times a day has a problem that needs to be checked out by a vet!
When we adopted our first Ocicat Saphira, we noticed that she very rarely threw up a small hairball, no more than once every few months. She was two at the time, was being retired from breeding, and was actually a surprise Christmas gift from our daughters. Even though we had not planned on a cat at that time and did not pick her out, it took us about two days to fall totally in love with her and the breed. So much so that eleven months later we adopted a second Oci girl, Viola. She was a little 18 month old fireball at the time, and had no problems for the first few months. After that she started vomiting immediately after a meal, several times a week. She did not seem ill or distressed either before or after. One thing we had noticed was that she ate really fast, and we thought this might be part of the problem. We had been feeding them each half of a three ounce can of food, three times a day, so we broke each meal into two parts and fed each part about an hour apart. We also broke up the food and spread it all over her plate, to slow her down. This eliminated at least 95% of the problem.
One thing we do to keep the hairballs down is to groom them with a grooming glove about once a week. Ocis are a fairly low shedding shorthair breed, a longer hair breed like a Main Coon or a Persian would require much more frequent and thorough grooming.
I have one who hasn't vomited a hairball in the 3 years we've had him.
I also had one who had a very touchy stomach, he was upchucking once a day every day (no hairballs) till we put him on food made for sensitive stomachs. Then his vomiting was toned back to once a week at most.
Um, yeah, cats do. They eat grass for an upset tummy. Ming will cough but I haven't seen his throw up. Thank heavens. The others well, I've got a rag ready.
that is complete normal. not all cats cough up in sight. it can be doing it when youre asleep or not around. also some cats dont shed as much hair so the hair balls dont appear as often
