If I had a guinea pig and I let it out for some free time around my room, will it end up making a huge poop mess? I'm interested in getting some sort of long lived rodent, but I do not want it pooping all over everything.
Yes. Guinea pigs need to be eating pretty much constantly for their digestive health as well as to keep their teeth down, so they do poo a lot.
Some guinea pigs are willing to hold it while they're out but I wouldn't count on that. You could always put a few towels down or newspapers so it's easy to clean up.
Keep in mind that guinea pigs are social herd animals that need to live in pairs, so if you get any it should be two. If you want a single animal then guinea pigs aren't right for you.
If you want an animal that doesn't poo all the time then it might be best to stay away from rodents :)
Lonin is correct -- guinea pigs poop alot! It's also true that SOME piggies tend to hold it while they are out exercising, but there's no way to tell whether the piggies you get will be like this.
That said, the poos aren't wet and slimy. They sweep up quite easily. I would be more concerned about the urine. They will piddle too while they are out and that will much more difficult to clean up. It's best to have a plastic tarp down and then a fleece blanket. (Again, there are a few piggies that will hold it while out and about, but you never know.)
If you are seriously considering a guinea pig, I strongly suggest browsing around guineapigcages.com
There you can see how other piggie owners care for their piggies. Single piggies are never recommended. They need at least one other piggie to be with.
I have a guinea pig. It does not make a very big mess, if it poops it would be only once or twice and it's poop is dry so is is easy to clean off the floor. Btw if you let it out make sure there is no places it can get stuck. I love my guinea pig and i recommend you get one.
