Okay, so I am academically smart, and I learn a lot of things from what i read. In class, when the teacher tells me to do something, like research a country, I'll do that and get more than I need, then I get an A+ on it. I have a 4.0 GPA, and I come off as a bit weird. Science and math are so straightforward to me, but people have told me I lack common sense. Many have told me to utilize that part of my brain in practical situations. So, an example would be, my mom told me to walk the family dog, and I do that. Along the way, our dog goes and does his business on someone else's yard. I come back, and my mom asked if the dog took a dump, and I said "yes." She's like "did you pick it up afterward?" and I'm like, "no" then I get a scolding like, "if the dog takes a dump on someone's property, you PICK it up!" then i go and say, "but i didn't have a plastic bag with me." I countered, then she says "Use your common sense! You WOULDN'T like it if some stranger left poop on YOUR property, now would you? Next time, CARRY a plastic bag!" Now that I think about it, I didn't use common sense. Another time, my mom was cleaning the house, and she told me to go get a rug from the box outside. Now, the box holds a lot of rugs, and me, being me, I went and picked a random rug from the box. The rug I picked had stains and a big smudge of dirt on it. I brought it to her, and she's dumbfounded. I'm like, "you told me to bring you a rug from the box." she's shaking her head like, "when I told you to bring me a rug from the box, I meant give me a CLEAN one." and I say, "you weren't specific enough." and she looks at me strangely and lectures me on using that common sense. In fact, I hardly use it at all, and expect some people to elaborate or explain themselves more so I can understand it. I can calculate the average mass of a dumpster truck and derive the function of x, but is it that strange that I can't do simple things like walk the dog and pick up the droppings, or bring clean rugs to people?

That is a trait of Asperger's Syndrome. You only understand things literally. Your social skills are diminished while your analytical skills are enhanced.
I have it and my son has it. You simply have to teach yourself to remember your interactions with persons and remember how you must questions to make what they ask very clear to you. You pay attention to different things than others. Aspergers persons usually have great memories so you will just have to add a section to your memory on "How I am supposed to act in this situation"
.
Asperger syndrome (AS), also known as Asperger disorder (AD), is an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) that is characterized by significant difficulties in social interaction and nonverbal communication, alongside restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior and interests. It differs from other autism spectrum disorders by its relative preservation of linguistic and cognitive development. Although not required for diagnosis, physical clumsiness and atypical (peculiar, odd) use of language are frequently reported
You are so used to doing what you are told by rules, theories, and other people, that you do not think for yourself. With each correction you are gaining experience and understanding, both things needed for common sense.
