Hmm..I don't prefer any particular brand. I tend to build my own computers but if I had to choose a brand I would go with Apple, but you are going to spend quite a bit there. I currently have a 19" lcd and I don't think I would go any smaller than that but it also depends on what you will be using the computer for. The main thing you need to look at when purchasing a computer, besides price, would be the specs. Brand names don't really mean much if your specs are shabby. By specs I mean, Hard drive space, RAM, Processor speed, etc.
