Judges look at what the other side presents as evidence. I've never heard of a credit report being used as evidence and there would likely be a hearsay issue with using them because all of the companies that reported on your credit and the credit reporting agencies wouldn't be available for cross examination. Same goes for references.
Now if you have a history of not being able to hold a job that could be used against you because you could be asked about it in court.
Judges can look at and consider every piece of evidence that is presented to them.
A determination of "unfit" doesn't come in to play unless the judge is deciding whether or not to terminate parental rights. In a custody dispute, the judge is trying to determine which parent would be able to provide a life that will be in the best interests of the child.
If one parent is responsible, employed, paid bills on time, never gets evicted/has a peaceful home, etc. and one parent can't pay bills, can't hold a job, can't maintain an apartment, etc. - which parent would YOU think is more likely to convince the child s/he is the better parent?
