There are always going to be some barriers... racial, lifestyle, or gender related. But... they are not as they used to be. I think there is more of a racial barrier between the police and the general public. In some departments, when they hire a minority... they catch a lot of flack from prodominately white suburbs.
I think many departments now are so diverse it there is really no second thought. I am sure there are still departments (maybe in Deliverence) where they don't hire outside the Nazi looking white males, but not where I live. My husband is the chief of a nearby city. He hired the first black male ever in the town... which by the way is one of the most racist towns ever in Missouri. He caught a lot of garbage from it, but he stuck to his guns. The officer is good people and he has kept him on despite the crap from the community.
Not really... being a minority really helps out when you're a cop in some places, like cities, because it lets you relate to the community you're serving...
There's still some racial barriers, but I don't think it is the way it was back in the day...
And I'm impressed with all the answers so far, everyone so far is being reasonable, given the volatile nature of the question.
Not at all. Most people departments all go out of there way to recruit minorities, at the expense of possibly more qualified white male applicants (say what you will right or wrong, but in many PDs, women and minorities get bonus points when they apply).
I work with several black officers, I have never seen them denied a promotion or transfer to a different unit based on their race.
no my sister just became a cop and at her graduation. Not to be racist, but there were alot of blacks, and mexicans so i dont think so. If anything there is a barrier for women becuase it is a guy job but she made it a year and a half later.
Well im not goin to say no but not a most def. yes.
Could you be a little more specific? Are you simply referring to the hiring process or something else such as the promotional process, bidding process etc.?
to tell you the truth, everywhere you go, there will always be some racial issues. i mean, we can't stop it, so why fight it? not everybody has to like you. and from experience, i know, that not everybody will... so you just have to know that from the get go.
