Of course it's a portal that sucks you in for it is the only form of enlightenment that is attainable through the exchange of dialogue. In the East enlightenment is attempted to be found by meditation that empties the mind. Western religion attempts to find enlightenment by the grace of a God. Philosophy is unique in that it attempts to find enlightenment by reason. It values the power of language for it sees that language can be a tool for reason. In the East, the "self" is an illusion to be over came; In the West, the first article of philosophy is "know thyself." The self is found and discovered by the exchange of opinions in the quest to find truth . It is the paradox of our strange nature that by attempting to find enlightenment for ourselves via philosophy we must engage with others to find out their thoughts and opinions. In the East they seek to end the self and end up in lonely meditation while strangely philosophical enlightenment of one's self can only come via the community of one's philosophical friends. We only hope that our friends are up to the task....
The dweller has given thee an OBAMA-esque answer, It is fraught with much flowery language meant to entice you into voting your heart rather than your mind. Despite his occasional grammatical foibles (which have admittedly lessened in recent months), his answer is quite compelling.
YET, we strive in earnest to grasp for the philosophical existence. It is a journey one takes alone. The diaogue is therefore internal. Lucky is the man who finds a kindred spirit with whom to share this rarified journey. Nonetheless, the portal can take but one at a time. When (and if) your calling comes, you shall be therefore sucked in alone. And you will willingly leave your friends...behind. Lest, of course, the portal calls upon them as well.
You should, begrudgingly then, give Best Answer to Mountain Dweller, who we will welcome when he arrives at the other end...
Yeup! I believe that there are two types of people in the world. Those who are content with their ignorance, and those who strive for more and more knowledge. And unlike most things that I have studied, philosophy teaches me how to think, something that I cant cut off without alot of booze or alot of weed. Always thinking... more and more and moreeeee -Of which I place sole blame on Philosophy.

No, because it is all talk and no action.
You can talk about philosophy and life all you want, but reality is someone has to clean up your trash after you leave the table.
You can talk about philosophy all you want, but the rocks don't care. Those rocks were there before you came, and will still be there after you die.
Why not try putting words into actions and see what happens?
Well kind of, I can't see myself ever going back to what I was.
So philosophy and knowledge itself open doors that we wouldn't know were there.
It is like a black-hole, sucking up all the nearby thoughts, so be warned...
