You see this with drunks quite a bit. It's usually a "narcissistic" problem - the person just never had much love growing up - never developed properly. Drunks are especially prone to this because mostly they grew up with drunk parents who promised everything and delivered nothing.

So this sort of person always feels compelled to be BIGGER than life - be SPECIAL - and this means lying about everything. Or, this sort of person feels the need to control your attention - so they lie about the BIG DEAL they can give you one some car (that they don't own). Or the liar is going to score you some really GREAT weed from a guy he knows if you give him some money (but he doesn't know anybody like that and there is no weed).

Liars like this are quite common. Just realize that they feel horrible about themselves and need to lie to somehow feel 'normal'. Just listen and walk away - don't get drawn into the lies.

my ex is a compulsive liar. he lies about everything. i could ask him what he had for lunch and he would lie about it. i think some people can't tell the truth, either from lying so much that it becomes normal for them or because they feel they need to make up stuff to make themselves seem interesting.

Yes, I do. This person had an inferiority complex and felt the need to lie about everything in hopes it would make him seem more interesting or of some importance.

yes. I know this one person who always lies. she lies about her whole life basically and always claims to either have a boyfriend or a fiance and I am thinking how the heck are you always taken or engaged??? and the stories about them aren't even believable!!! and whenever anyone else is suppose to be meet this mystery person they always break up right before the meeting...so basically no one has even seen any of her "boyfriends or fiances"...I do want to know why they lie so much too...It's like are you that embarrassed to acknowledge that your life isn't perfect to fabricate all these lies....why would lie about your whole life?? it's so sad!!

An ex girlfriend of mine used to say that relatives and friends of hers had died if she didn't think she was getting enough attention. She also used to say she was pregnant/had just had a termination, had attempted suicide, had been abused by her mother etc...

Yeah, best thing I ever did breaking up with that nut-job.
