Have I ever? Daily. But that's because I'm the illegitimate great-grandson of Dorian Gray. I can't IMAGINE life without mirrors. I personally don't do ENOUGH self-grooming, but people WANTED mirrors, and used ANYTHING that would work, until the next better mirror was discovered. Remember the stories of Narcissus? A pool of water was enough of a mirror for him to fall in love with a reflection. And aside from grooming, there's cars, and tools, and optics, and solar collectors, etc. And no, I don't think they would, in general, be less self-centered. A few people may be, but others would make up the loss. Without mirrors, your self-image regarding appearance is going to be based on the way others treat you. I think it would breed even MORE of a cult of appearances, as people could never do reality checks on themselves. Why SHOULD your face look like you? Your face is largely the genetic accident of your ancestry (at least while you are young - character shows more as you age), while your "you" is constructed of lots of things that are unique to your life experience. I think many people see their face, and/or body, as a relatively foreign thing, while others' identity includes it implicitly.
