I've never owned one but I have a friend who owns a 2003 Elantra (w/automatic transmission) and she loves her car and it's been a very reliable car for her, she only wishes that her car is a stick instead of an automatic.
Test drive one, then test drive a Mazda 3. Better yet, rent one in Denver, Colorado and drive to Aspen, Colorado and see how many cars pass you up the mountains.
