I use a pencil eyeliner with cream eyeliner at the tip :)

pencil is easier to control and you can always smudge it out. also the mistakes are easier to clean. Liquid can make a big mess but the lines it creates are crisp and sharp and its longer lasting. So both kinds have their own benefits. You could always opt out for cream or gel since theyre like in between pencil and liquid. Theyre easy to control, lines are nice and sharp, long lasting, and easy cleanup. The only problem is that they could dry out fast.

I usually just apply pencil since I dont have time to do liquid and wait for it to dry. I think that the way you apply your eye liner is smart since the pencil could be a guideline for your liquid. hope this helped :)

Liquid. Liquid takes time to shape to perfection, but it hardly ever smudges if that's the look you're going for: a clean, perfect, defined eye.

To me, pencil is rough to apply, unless it's on your waterline. The result, if you don't stretch your lid silly, is an uneven, broken lined eye. But of course it is much easier to smudge, fix, and blend for a less harshly defined eye.

But if you have a thin enough brush, you can always use eyeshadow to line your eye! That's what I've been doing lately, and it results in a much softer eye. You can also add details and gauge the boldness with the amount of eyeshadow you put on the brush.

Pencil.

I used both but prefer the pencil because it is a more natural look. It depends on the ocassion actually. The gel or liquid eye liner can look hard, make your eye lids look heavy or be too dramatic.
