when I take the dog Mt. climbing this weekend I will have her on a Flexi so that she cam better choice her own footing - but I can call her in and she will be on a it locked short when people are around
For walks around town I usually use a 6' leash - long enough that I can give her some head to potty - but I can also practice some heeling etc. with her
For trialing in obedience use a 3-4' braided leather leash, for Rally excellent we are required to be on a 6'
I use a normal 6-ft leash rather than an extendable leash.
I had one of the extendable ones for a while, but it was hard to stop it from extending sometimes and the cord finally broke b/c my dog likes to pull with all the force of her 37-lb body. Haha...Anyway, she also would get too close to the street when we were on the sidewalk, so I changed to a regular lead. Another thing that I didn't like was that on an extendable lead, she was able to wander far enough into other people's yards to try to do her business. Well, that was not acceptable once she was no longer a tiny puppy, so she learned very fast that walks are for exercise, not bathroom breaks.
I also bought something called a "gentle leader", which goes around my dog's nose and head; it keeps her from choking because she isn't pulling against her collar. She also can't get far enough from me that she is endangered by passing cars.
As an avid hater of the flexi-lead. I prefer the 6 foot leather leash. And here's why I hate flexies.
1. Your dog does not need to be more then 6 feet from you, at all unless you’re training in the sport of tracking. And they do not use flexies but 10 foot to 20 foot cloth leads.
2. A dog on a flexi is NOT under the owner’s control! You might as well not bother with a leash at all if you’re on a flexi. You can't easily recall the dog or control it should it get more that a few feet from you.
3. Flexis are not strongly built. Big dogs break then all the time. The locking levers are cheaply made and wear out quickly.
4. Flexi can give you really really bad rope burn! The dog can trip you up and cause you injury with a flexi.
5. Most people with dogs on flexis are in my high opinion idiots.
Why a 6’ foot leather leash?
1. My dog is under my control. I can recall the dog easily, shorten the leash quickly and leather is really strong.
2. There are NO professional dog sports that allow the flexi; all dog sports allow the 6 foot leash of any material except chain. So cotton, nylon or leather is the industry standard. For a good reason.
3. I can use my 6 foot leather leash as a weapon, because if you've ever been hit with one you’re going to think twice about getting hit with one again. I can use my leash handle to fend off loose dogs. You can't do that with a flexi.
4. Leather feels good in your hands and gets better with age. The one draw back is that the dog can chew through it. But they can chew that wimpy string on a flexi too.
5. Leather and cloth leashed have been around for over a hundred years, hard to improve on perfection.
Extendable leashes are the MOST Pointless leashes ever!
Use a normal dog lead, that way you'll be in control & your dog won't be all over the place.
Honestly what happens when you have a flexi-leash & your dog is all over the side walk where other people need to walk, bike, stroll stollers, skate, with or without dogs? You can't just reel in your dog to get it out of the way!
Be a good, courteous citizen & use a regular dog lead.
Personally i myself use a basic thick dog leash. I have tried those extend-able ones and i'm so worried that it's going to lock up or break i'd just have to buy a new one anyways. It's all about preference though. If you have a bigger dog then i wouldn't suggest one like that because they should be close to you anyways unless in a field. then they even have training leashes with are just longer nylon leashes for cases like that. My dog is a med size dog and he gets aggressive around stray cats and wants to chase after squirrels and stuff so one that gives him more lead is a bad idea because i don't have full control over him and his actions. Good luck and i hope that i helped!
Their normal leads are nearly 2 metres long and I use these for normal walks and training. When I take my dogs to the lake in summer then I use the extendable leash so they can have a swim and I stay nice and dry on the shore.
Personally, I hate the Flexi-lead-type leashes. My dog is on a normal lead. I have various sizes depending on what we are doing.
The retractables can cause rope burns and offer limited control for the walker. I always feel they are going to pull out of my hand. Just not a fan, but it is a personal thing.
I use a normal leash because I can actually control my dog. People who use Flexi leads have a very hard time of controlling their dogs, and most are very reactive and poorly socialized. I can't even escape from dogs on Flexi leads because they reach so far! It's annoying.
Retractable leashes are ineffective. You so no longer have any administration over your dogs and that is totally risky in case you drop it or your dogs receives wrapped round something. A 6ft leash is the most proper. It has more beneficial length than a 4ft so that you may do more beneficial, yet no longer too lengthy that it may reason complications. the colour would not count number, in basic terms %. the only you want. in case you want an same collar and leash, purchase it. you may try them on contained in the shop to seel how they provide the impact of being.
We use a normal dog leash for both of our dogs. We use them because the German shepherd mix chewed through the other one. Our other dog a lab is aggressive with smaller white dogs and we have better control with the normal dog leash.
