Yup. Be a white person living in Hawaii (as opposed to being a tourist) trying to get waited on in a store or restaurant. Sears in Ala Moana was the worst.
Until we moved to CA we did not eat out. One of the cooks at the Top of the I actually hawked a loogie on my food. I showed it to the waiter and he laughed and took my napkin out of my lap - brushed it off and said in a very loud and mocking tone "there - all ok now."
We sold everything we owned to get out of that hell hole.
They do not treat tourists that way because they are the income givers to the state. But if they find out you live there - you will be treated like crap.
Depends on how you define "openly." On the one hand, most people don't come out and say "I am trying to be sexist/racist by doing this/that" but they do sexist/racist things quite openly.
The media are a good example. Their portrayal of marginalized groups is not made up out of whole cloth, but it is very distorted. It's more of a fun-house mirror than either a framed picture _or_ the reality.
Then there are people like that idiot at Harvard, or the stupid bell curve guy (and the faulty way in which IQ texts are used in general), and there are a lot of overtly racist portrayals of, for instance Obama (see any TP rally). There are also overt hate groups openly operating in the US. The KKK is still out there. In public.
Do people come out and admit they're being racist/sexist? Generally no.
Do they say and do racist/sexist things in all kinds of places, even restaurants and schools (e.g. only focusing on African Americans' history one month out of the year and very disproportionately white males the other 11)? Absolutely. There is no question in my mind.
Oh yes - women are still paid less than men for the same work - and minorities are regularly discriminated against in housing and real estate and loans and all sorts of stuff.
It's all illegal - but it goes on all the time. Look at all the veiled filthy racism against Obama on a garbage station like FOX FAKE "News" - it's 24/7 - teabag racism.
have not got a clue, yet racism specific has brought about havoc around the country for the period of this final election, and Obama nonetheless gained with a landslide. that's great. communicate approximately me, i visit win! appears like that may not undesirable.
only heterosexual white males are usually called those things and also get blamed for everything.. If someone does not like or appreciate living in a white society they are free to back where they came from (which is usually nothing much to write home about)..
