A Labrador retriever would be my choice. Too many Goldens have been bred to have excessive coats which means excessive shedding and also that they just look all fuzzy and messy most of the time. Some people are actually getting them clipped, which is a bad idea and costs around $150.00 each time.
Labs get that oily smell that many water retriever breeds seem to get. Bathing helps for a day or two. You have to be able to handle the smell. It gets to be kind of stinky, to some people. You have to be prepared to play fetch for hours, daily. They shed a lot, too. They get bigger than people think. They are HYPER. They need exercise and training and lifelong socialization.
Neither breed is much good as a watch dog, generally speaking. They are more likely to give the burglar a tennis ball.
Not a big fan of either, I'm a Northern breed gal!
But between the two, I like the Golden's personality and energy better, but the labs grooming and overall general health better.
GR's are known for their wonderful personalities and tend not to be as food crazy or overly enthusiastic and energetic like a lab can be. (This is in my experience, every dog is unique!)
Labs coat care is by far easier than a GR, and they don't have the GR's breed propensity towards cancer.
Both, when chosen from a good breeder, are known for their even tempers, out going behavior and sparkling personalities making them the two most common (by far!) chosen and bred for Service Dog training.
Labrador Retriever!!!! I have a black male 8 year old Labrador retriever. They are one of my favorite dogs... I love him to death!! He is lazy, but every time he sees me he goes crazy with excitement!!
Are you getting a dog? If so, I hope you get a Lab!!
I love them all and have worked with many of them as vet technician.
I can tell you that they are very similar, especially if well-bred. They all shed a lot, but Goldens have a lot more hair to comb out and dry after a bath, if that matters.
I have owned three labs -- all at the same time, so I'm partial.
We find that Golden owners and Lab owners tend to get them over and over again, so I don't think you could go wrong with either.
Again, very, very similar dogs in every way. I will make one exception, though. We notice that chocolate labs CAN tend to be a little goofy (with apologies to owners of awesome chocolates!)
I love all breeds, but my baby is a American Pit Bull Terrier. But if I had to choose between the two, I couldn't. I've had experience with both breeds, and they are both amazing dogs.

Neither, thank you. The Doberman Pinscher has been my breed of choice for 29 years.

Out of the 2, the Golden...
But I actually prefer the APBT, Staffy Bull, American Staffy, Dogo Argentino, GSD, Great Dane, Tibetan Mastiff, English Mastiff, Anatolian Shepherd, Great Pyrenees, Rottweiler, Doberman Pinscher, Bernese Mountain Dog, Greater Swiss Mountain Dog, Cane Corso, etc.,

If I had to pick out of the two, I would pick lab. My reason is simply because I don't like to deal with long hair.
Neither
I don't think you can compare the two. They are both gorgeous dogs.
