OK, I have absolutely no knowledge of how to use the bus system unless I don't have to switch buses. I haven't ridden one since I was in junior high school so I really need help. My daughter is doing a math project and she's trying to figure out all the different ways (including costs, etc.) to get from our home to a specific destination in Orange County, CA but the buses in our area are run by one company and the buses in the destination area are run by another company. The trip planners these companies have on their sites have done us no good... can anyone be of assistance and help us navigate these darn things or give any helpful advice?
Thank you!

Well, I am sure you can get there. It would be easier to provide you detailed information if I knew more specific streets or cities. In general however, most bus systems overlap between counties. For example between Pomona and Brea you could use either the MTA system (LA county) line #684 or the OCTA system (Orange county) line #757 The FootHill transit system also connects with Orange county on some of their routes. Another general example would be Riverside county to Orange county where the RTA (Riverside system) has a route to Orange county #149 and the OCTA (Orange county) has a route to RIverside #794 Keep in mind too for longer trips the Metrolink Commuter Rail system might help since they have an Inland Empire to Orange county line. Again, specifics will help in getting you the information you need.
La County Bus Routes
One way would be to use the Metrolink Orange County line, i.e., use an MTA or other LA city bus to get to the nearest metrolink station and then ride metrolink into Orange County. OCTA has metrolink connector buses from all the stations.
OCTA also has 2 LA express buses but I think they go into downtown LA.
you can use the metro trip planner (at http://www.metro.net)/
it will show you connections for OCTA if its required to get to your destination (say say you wanted go from El Monte
to Santa Ana,
the metro trip planner
will tell you to take the 577 to Cal state Long beach then transfer to OCTA 60 and that bus will take to Santa Ana
