Hi. I'm about to start my college degree in French and Spanish. I've been studying French for a while now and would like to think I'm pretty advanced but I'm a complete beginner in Spanish.
The thing thats reallly getting me the most about it is the pronunciation. I cannot FOR THE LIFE OF ME ROLL MY R'S!!!!! Seriously, how do you do it? French is suposed to be 'difficult' to speak but I find it very simple, Spanish is a totally different kettleof fish for me :(
Can you please tell me how to do it?
Thanks

You think Spanish is difficult? Try to learn Portuguese, and then you'll start to think Spanish is veeeery easy...
I believe that if you don't learn certain pronunciations (the Spanish or Russian rolling 'r', the French or German throat 'r', or the German gurgling 'ch') before the age of 12, its pretty much not gonna happen.
Just keep practicing! You know how in English, the 'r' is like your tongue cupped against the roof of your mouth, and then you just kinda blow out? Well the Spanish rolling 'r' is the tongue not cupped, its kinda held in its round, spongy form, and as the air moves over it, vibrate it. LOL that's the best I can explain it.
ok, i don't want to be the bearer of bad news, but no one, no matter how eloquently they phrase it, can explain how to do it(rolling the spanish R i mean). you have to keep trying until you hit that eurica moment.
i mean my girlfriend(who is spanish)'s sister(also spanish) couldn't roll r's until recently, i was in her house at the time when she finally figured it out, and she was running around the house celebrating, rrrrrrrrr ing for about an hour afterward. might sound strange to you, but in spanish, not being able to roll r's is equivalent to having a pretty bad lisp or stutter. so it's important that you keep trying.
• Open your lips a bit to make air flow
• Position-your tongue behind your upper teeth gums
• Try pronouncing something in English that could help you with rolling your tongue (for example: Butter/Ladder)
• Try replacing Rs with Ds [practice > pdactice] or making a T sound while pronouncing Ds
Practice saying: ladder, ladder, ladder over and over.
