Bio fuel algae is genetically engineered to produce oil as a byproduct. Monsanto has bio engineered several crops and has demonstrated an inability to keep them contained. Should biofuel algae "escape" into the wild, which seems likely they the potential exists to have a bio engineered oil pollution that is as out of control as present algae blooms and dead zones. Monsanto's solution is to make it a crime to have their products on your land not matter how they came to be there??!!
The bioengineering solution is the monsanto "terminator" gene. This allows a product to grow but not to produce fertile offspring. The problem with this "solution" is that the terminator gene itself could escape into the wild. Bio engineered products have a tendency to take over natural populations. Should the "terminator" gene begin to dominate there is the potential to slowly "terminate" our food supply and by extension all life.
See, I had not thought of the idea that these bio fuel algaes would escape into public or natural waterways. It hadn't occured to me. I supposed that they had contained and maintained pools or raceways that they were keeping everything under lock and key in. Good thinking.
