It means you need to make 3 statements -- one that appeals to a reader's sense of ethics, one that appeals to a reader's emotions and one that appeals to a reader's sense of logic. Greek words: Ethos = ethics, appealing to a person's sense of right & wrong; Pathos = emotion; and Logos = logic.
For example, a logos sentence might highlight her most impressive statistic; a pathos statement would say something about her that would arouse some sort of emotion in the reader; an ethos statement would say something that makes a person want to do or think something by arousing their own sense of right and wrong or their sense of justice.
Ah, AP Lang projects. The memories. For a formal paper (or a podcast) on Gay Rights, you need to incorporate Logos, Pathos, and Ethos. Logos is the reasoning behind the paper. Every paper thesis is an opinion, therefore you gotta back it up with facts. Logical, real facts with citations that people will believe. I don't know how your podcast will go, but let's say you want to disprove the Catholic reasoning "the Bible says so." Don't just google an response. Find an actual bible, with an actual quote, and back it up. Pathos, is the persuasiveness of the paper. You state off a bunch of facts, but why would listeners like your podcasts? Because you reel them in. Ensure that the language and fluidity of your podcast is solid. Think about who your audience will be, and create language appropriate for them. For instance, you wouldn't use large vocab on elementary school kids, but 2nd grader speak for an adult doesn't work either. Remember also, Persuasiveness does not equal creative writing. Your podcast is an essay, not a poem. And finally, Ethos is the ethical standing of the paper, meaning you. A good factual persuasive paper is a powerful tool, but how the author sounds is everything. Make sure everything is perfect. Check punctuation and pronunciation, rehearse a couple times before recording. You want to sound like the expert, whether or not you actually are. Say you were listening to a podcast about the current economic crisis. Who would you rather listen to, A Wall Street journalist, or that 6th grader who did it for a project?
