satan has children of his kind. They are the jinn kind. They are different to the human kind and the Angels.
Many of them are evil and they are able to harm humans sometimes.
Some possess humans and so that person might become strange in behaviour or become very sick without doctors knowing why.
There is a Shaykh in Scandinavia who visited Australia. He has a specialty maa shaa' Allaah, that when he recites Qur'aan in front of that possessed person, the jinn would come out and not return.
Cara, it's a very hard subject to make any decision over because it leans both ways into discussion. I read a book called the Exorcism of Emily Rose. Which is a true story of a German girl who died through an exorcism. They even made a film about this subject which was debated in a court if she died from this or natural causes. It's quite a very good interesting film. It has Laura Linney(I'm A Fan) in it as the lawyer defending the priest. There were points on both sides of this subject which leaves you open minded on fact or truth of Exorcism.
As far as western culture is concerned: It didn't exist in the Tanakh ("Old Testament"), appears suddenly in the hellenistic period, and then disappeared again during the renaissance & enlightenment.
Apparently, satan found better things to do with his time.
Some modern theologians believe that demon possession is still going on, but the victims just take prescription medication and move on - or else become serial killers.
If you think you need one, or know someone who does, the catholic church has a long complicated process for getting one, or several fundamentalist christian sects will do one on shorter notice. They each have texts they follow with prayers and rites they believe are effective.
There is no procedure described in the Bible for doing one, other than just commanding the demon to leave - some require prayer and fasting first. That's it.
It's fairly common in Christian churches, but unheard of in atheism, Wicca and elsewhere. Basically, it seems that you need to believe in a devil to be possessed by demons.
