External Hard Drive OS Question?
Is it possible to load windows XP on an External HDD and then when someone has a virus, just plug in the External HDD into the person's laptop, boot windows from your HDD and run your antivirus program to scan their disk?
Update:so GuyOnEarth, What would you do in a case like that? is it possible to use something like Apricorn - Data Transfer Cable to clone the drive to an external and scan that external on a working computer and then boot from the external on the original problem pc?

What you should do is make a Windows boot disk. Then you boot windows from the disk, once windows boots, take out the disk and make an antivirus boot disk. This will allow the programs to load but not be infected. You cant do it with an external hard drive because the external drive would get infected. If you get a 8GB flash drive and make it bootable for windows then lock it from being written on then that will work. You'll just want a 2GB flash drive for the antivirus to boot from.

Yes it's possible but it will be slow because the external hard disk is connected to your pc via Usb and the internal is Sata connected drive. Remember to adjust the bios so it will the first to run otherwise it will continue to search for an OS on the primary disk. When you connect a HDD into an effected computer their is always a risk that your HDD can infected depends on the virus strength. I recommend you to run the pc on safe mode to minimize the risk.
