I'm haveing problems starting my 1997 Chevy Blazer LT it has a 4.3l sfi ,Its turning over and just not cranking. i recently put a new starter on it and had the battery checked.I finally gave in and called a mechanic to come and get it.after about 24 hours they call and say they "believe" it is the fuel pump, they tell me its gonna cost $650.00.... question one is...is this a fair [rice to change a fuel pump? and question 2 is, does this sound like it could be the problem?

1) It sounds like a fair price since the pump is in the tank...call around to some other dealers or shops and see what they would charge for the same procedure. This link might supply you with recommended shops in your area or call AAA and see who they recommend.

2) I get a little leary when someone says they "believe" the problem is due to something. Find out how they reached that conclusion. Did they perform a fuel pressure test? Is the fuel pump relay OK? could weak pressure be due to intermittent function of it?....relays are electrical items which can work intermittently after a while. It's fairly cheap to replace a relay or swap it with another one and eliminate that possible problem. A blown fuse? Did they replace or check the fuel filter? There's an item called a fuel pressure regulator which may be bad and causing low fuel pressure. I would try to pin them down more on how they arrived at their conclusion...some techs or shops just throw parts at a problem without properly diagnosing it which costs you more money. If they insist that the pump is bad, have them put that in writing and if it turns out not to be the problem, have the shop owner pay for it as a misdiagnosis. Let them know that is what you expect. Always ask for the old parts.
If you ran out of gas at some point, it's very likely the pump could be bad...fuel pumps in the tank need fuel to cool them while operating. Running out of gas can fry them out in no time.
Sadly its not to bad ... The pump at most retails outlets is 275.00 to 300.00. The mechanic will get a little markup on it and then the labor which is about 3.5 hours book. you might ask what they would charge in just labor and try and get the part yourself just remember if you do that the mechanic does not warranty the part so if it goes out you will have to pay the labor all over again.
Ask them to see the 'book'. The book tells mechanics how many hours to charge for.
Looks like the pump costs about 400$ and they have to drain your tank, and take our your tank, so it looks like a legitimate quote. Plus, they may run into stuck bolts etc.
$600
yes both sound like they are on the up and up. the fuel pump i believe is i the gas tank, so they have to drop the gas tank in order to put it .
