Took some pictures recently and after a while the camera (a Finepix s602 Zoom) came up with the read error. The camera takes the smart media cards.
I have tried connecting the camera to the computer and tried to connect the card directly. Both methods were unsuccesful in reading the data on the card.
I have two memory cards, a 16mb and 64mb. The 64 card is the one with the desired photos, which is the one with the read error. When the 16 mb card was used with the camera, everything was working fine. This made me believe that it was the memory card that is the problem.
My question is is there a way to recover the photos from the supposedly faulty memory card?

DON'T FORMAT THE CARD JUST YET! Take no more pics until you've recovered the photos, take the card out of the camera. Here's some freeware photo recovery software that should be what you're looking for:

You will need to use a flash card reader with this software. If you don't have one, get one, they're cheap:

The reason this occurred is that you likely never formatted the card. The card will work fine in the beginning but eventually will corrupt. AFTER you've recovered the photos, format the card in your camera to prevent this from happening again (dig out that instruction manual to figure out how). Keep in mind formatting will also totally erase your card, so again only do this after you've recovered the photos.
Even though this is an older thread I thought I'd share my fix as it is still relevant. I recently had the same problem with my sons finepix s1800. The problem seem to be a faulty memory card and he got read errors when trying to take pictures and preview them.
It turns out that the issue is not with the card but the camera.. It needs to be reset to factory settings. Below is a link to my video on how to do this. At least for the s1800.
Dont' know about recovering your existing files, but you can help to prevent the problem in the future by formatting your card after transfering your images to your computer or getting them printed. This function is usually somewhere in your tools menu on the camera. Good luck!
you're arranged to continually format a memory card earlier use. it somewhat is done indoors the MENU of your digital camera. Formatting (that could additionally be carried out periodically) removes all pictures thoroughly from the cardboard and facilitates avert such blunders. Or, if formatting does no longer artwork... the contacts on the xD card might desire to be grimy. The guidance manual exhibits wiping them with a cushty dry textile...and by no potential touch them with your palms. in case you have lost your shopper guidance manual, i want to recommend you pass to the 1st hyperlink below, the placement you could acquire it as a pdf. checklist. on the same time as there, you're arranged to click on 'checklist' up the the excellent option left hand area...and choose save As...and save it to the workstation consistent with risk. sturdy success...
