Pro Censorship Essay

People around the country watch hours of television each and every day, by watching so much television people are destined to come across some type of violence that affects them negatively. As a United States Citizen I strongly believe it is the Government’s duty to protect viewer’s from the violence on Television.

Many people feel it is the parent’s duty to control what their children view on television. In the article “Parents Should Be Responsible for Monitoring Their Children’s Television Viewing” by Adam Thierer, he even admits ,”I’m not sure what my mom was doing at the time, but she probably should have turned the T.V off or found something better for me to watch.” Can we really rely on parents twenty-four seven to monitor what their children are watching on television? In the article’’ Violence in the Media Justifies Censorship” written by Bradley Steffens, many people do not know the Government not only has the right but also the duty under the constitution to “ensure domestic tranquility and promote the general welfare by regulating all kinds of behavior.” Therefore it is the Government’s duty to screen and censor everything that will be viewed by the citizens. Congress is unlikely to do so however, because members of the entertainment industry donate millions of dollars to the political campaigns(“violence” 2). Is money really more valuable than the quality of television programs that millions of people view each day? Some people will argue by saying the Government cannot do anything because it is free speech, but when your “free speech” starts affecting people negatively the Government needs to step in. Unfortunately the Government is not doing its job, therefore it is up to the public to stop being brainwashed by the media and demand that congress more closely regulate the content of the entertainment media(“violence” 2).

The problem most citizens have with all the violence in the media is how it affects people negatively. People that work for the media say it has no influence on people at all, if so then why do we have so many commercials and infomercials trying to persuade people to purchase things on television? If the things on television do not influence people all those commercials would be pointless. In all actuality the studies are showing facts that are completely opposite than what the media is saying. The American Association ,The American Psychological Association, The American Academy of Pediatrics, The National Center for Disease Control, and the U.S Surgeon General have all issued reports concluding that watching television violence is directly related to violent behavior In real life(“Violence 1 and 2”). Studies also show that children and adults who watch large numbers of aggressive programs also tend to hold attitudes and values that favor the use of aggression to solve conflicts(“Violence 2”).

The protection from violence in the media strongly relies on the Government. It is a proven fact that violence on television influences children, that is why we need more censorship when it comes to television to protect the citizens.

i know most people will be confused on my veiws its just that this side had more facts soo yeah this isnt what i believed
