An engine will last long if it's taken care of, and fail early if it isn't. Simple as that.
Long high speed driving is easier on motor oil and engine parts. Any engine which has the least amount of hot and cold starts always lasts longer regardless of mileage. The grand total of all hot and cold starts determines over 80% of all engine wear. Trips over 15 miles gets the engine hot which helps to drive off crankcase moisture and oil contamination. Short slow trips positively kill internal combustion engines. Unburned gasoline enters the crankcase because the pistons and rings haven't expanded or normalized to make all the fuel burn in the combustion chambers.
People who pound a lot of highway miles don't have to have their oil changed as often as people who drive slowly around town or not at all.
Cars that are only driven on short trips (what I'm assuming you mean by "barely driven") don't get hot enough to burn off the condensation that forms inside of the engine. This condensation is corrosive and increases the acidity of the engine oil. If the oil is changed infrequently, it compounds the problem because of the build up of acid and the breakdown of the additive packages.
Engine life is directly proportional to maintenance history.
a car does need to be driven . otherwise all the fluids just settle.
