My 21 year old girlfriend(who was virgin before 6 months ago) got told she has dysplasia and precancerous cells. The doctor scheduled a follow up appointment for a couple weeks from now(within a month of the original papsmear) . . . I am confused as this is the only information I got, so I have some questions. Does scheduling a follow up within a month(I assume for a colposcopy?) mean that it was moderate or severe dysplasia? Or could it be mild and the doc still wanted a quick follow up as opposed to getting another papsmear in 6 months. Also if it is moderate or severe dysplasia will a procedure be needed or just monitoring the situation will be adequate? Should I be freaking out about this? Anyone who knows a lot about this some reliable info would be greatly appreciated!
Update:Forgot to ask, what is the time frame on this type of thing, in 6 months after exposure to HPV could severe dysplasia be present?

6 months from exposure to HPV to dysplasia and precancerous cells is super fast. It's supposed to take years, not months. Docs will always follow up this news with quick further test of colposcopy. They'd do the same whether moderate or severe, or even mild. So you can't tell anything from speed of response except that it's a responsible doc who is on top of things.
They'll want to do something if it's severe dysplasia. But this could all be a big mistake--there are lots of lab errors, and they try to err on the side of caution. The colposcopy will tell you more.
Don't freak out! Chances are this will all be resolved after the colposcopy. Remember--no sex within 48 hours of a gynecologic exam or one can get an abnormal pap.
it interior reason user-friendly to have an unusual pap. the opportunities of having something rather severe being incorrect are small. besides the undeniable fact that, might desire to a biopsy come decrease back that has you desiring extra scientific care, do no longer delay in getting it. the faster dysplasia is caught and taken care of, the extra useful your opportunities for an user-friendly and quickly restoration. As for the biopsy, its quite rapid and not too undesirable. this is style of like a very painful pap...some rapid pinches and that's it. carry a panty liner for the reason which you could spot for some hours to an afternoon later on. additionally, do no longer douche, use tampons or have intercourse for some days (ask your scientific professional extraordinarily once you could). do a touch reading on cervical dysplasia (you're able to do searches on it). Yahoo well being has an fairly good section so start up there. the superb advice i will grant is to no longer get too freaked out. once you're doing this now and you have been rather good approximately getting your paps then the probabilities of combating issues are good. merely be useful to ask your questions of your scientific professional...she or he would be ready to be responsive to extra useful than all and sundry else what is going on and what is going to happen next. additionally, do no longer pass or positioned off appointments. suited and instantaneous scientific care is a might desire to. good luck.
