Goldfish! They get huge and have such cute personalities. You can feed them by hand. They are very dirty and require more maintenance, but when you fall in love with them, it doesn't seem to matter. Go fancy, they are beautiful and there are many different kinds to make the tank interesting:)
Hello Vault! Like most here, I also like both fishes for the sake of variety and colours in my tank. However, if you are a beginner, then I would suggest you start with a tropical fish. These normally ask for less maintenance compared to the fancier goldfishes and are also rather tough. However, once you have been successful with a tropical fish, I would surely suggest you make a move for the brighter side, the goldfishes will surely add a spark to your tank. They will require close supervision, water treatments, tank cycling and many other goldfish specific adaptations but if you are a real fish lover, then you surely will find pleasure looking after these lovely creatures. They will grow brighter and more elegant with good care and that should be your reward! Good luck.
I love both. If I had to choose what to keep for the rest of my life I'd say tropicals. Much less restrictive.
* Goldfish can only live with similar kind of goldfish
* Goldfish can and will eat soft leaved plants
* Fancy goldfish and their food issues (the only thing mine were able to eat without buoyancy issues was home made food)
* Mandatory large tanks (well, large for me at least :P)
I also like labyrinth fish, and eventually I'd like to keep and possibly breed licorice gouramis (well, i don't think it's going to happen in the next 20-30 years lol).
On the other hand if you only have these two categories: goldfish vs. tropicals you miss a whole lot of awesome fish that need cooler water than your average tropicals but can't be kept with goldfish e.g. hillstream loaches, minnows, freshwater gobies, some specie of paradise fish and so on.
Tropical fish only, there is a wider variety of fish without the expense of a marine tank. Some of the fish such as the blue rams are just as colorful as the marine fish, With tropical fish you get a larger variety of body shapes and sizes compared to cold water. One added advantage for me is heating and cooling costs in the home. With nearly 20 tropical tanks I do not need to worry about heating in winter, and the tanks also keep the house cooler in summer, the humidity in the house always stays around 60-65 percent at around 22-26c all year round. I live in an area that varies from 0c in winter to 40+c in summer for prolonged periods of time.
i like both. if it was up to me, i would have a goldfish tank, a tropical community tank, a agressive tank, a shrimp tank and 2 marine tanks.
If you get a goldfish tank you can just focus on 1 goldfish. you know like get it the best food etc etc watch it grow to full size, develop its colours.
a community tank is obviously community focused. if your getting a community tank then make it themed, like amazon or something.
