In addition to the composition, the B&W conversion is a little flat. Everything is grey, with no black and white, thus lacking punch.
You will hear the advice quite often here in Y!A to "shoot from different angles". Both of these pictures might have been better if you had moved around to get the best vantage point and composition. Your feet are not nailed to the ground. Walk around your subject and think about different ways you can frame the shot. Try different viewpoints. And straighten your horizons.
I visited your Flickr. My favorite there was the closeup of Herman. Also "One Boat" is somewhat better than this boat picture. Try to avoid putting the horizon smack dab in the middle. Make sure the horizon is straight. Also bear in mind that turning a photo into B&W does not automatically make it more artistic.
You have a nice beginning. Learn more about exposure and composition. Keep learning and practicing and happy shooting!
Bad, I'm afraid. The first is messy, has a post sticking up into the foreground, has no real point of interest (what are we supposed to be looking at?) and lacks contrast.
The second has a strange brick thing in the foreground, has the main subject (or what is supposed to be the main subject, I think) almost totally obscured and has an absolutely terrible drunken horizon. Also lacks contrast. Neither shot is well composed.
I think they are decent. I'm pretty sure that these were taken in a hotel i visited in Seattle, buy i can't be sure of that.
Being just honest would be hurtful so..
Keep on shooting. Also, BW is a good tool, but don't over-use it. Play with other variables too, like contrast and brightness when you desature photos. (play around with not desaturating them fully...hmm...)
(i was looking at flickr btw)
um...overall i would say to keep on shooting for sure, and get feedback often (maybe every month or so...) Just take the camera everywhere. When i started, I got a good shot out of every 200 or 300 which I was ok with, and it helped me a ton (i took my camera evverry where). It let me personally look at my pics and i tought myself what was good and what wasnt. You can do the same....just keep it up!
the first one is a nice subject you are shooting, but it seems a bit out of focus or something. maybe if you used depth of field to focus just on the bike or something it would be a bit better.
and the second one to be honest, is not very good. nothing exciting in the picture, and it's froma very strange angle:/ sorry! keep trying though:)
the second one was not all the great, but the first one was a good start, it would have been an excellent picture if that pole wasnt blocking the bike. but i think you have good ideas :) keep up the work.

The bikes have potential as a subject but you have made them boring and ordinary. The shot is lacking any contrast and it is plain messy.
The boat (or is it the seagull or the posts?) is simply a terrible shot.
The horizon is not straight, there is a wall on bottom left?? there is no point of focus and again the shot is bland and "grey".
