My girlfriend and I are taking a cruise to San Juan, and we wanted to know of any good LOCAL (not a chain) restaurants in the area. A place that is not infested with tourists, but not a place where we will get sick. Any suggestions?

I am puertorican so I can give you a good recomendation ;)
This place is always full but it has great food!
It's named LA HAMBUERGUERA. Yes, it's a hambeguer place; bet they have the best hambuerguer you'll taste in your life!
It's very close form the cruise area, but you should take a taxi. It's located very close to the MORRO.
You can go to PIÑONES.
You can also go to a restaurant called RAÍCES that has super delicious puertorican food. You'll love it!
The 2nd thing I wanted to tell you; Puerto Rico it's not just San Juan. You can go to Fajardo and eat th freashest fish or your life!!
San Juan is not a picture of what is Puerto Rico, just saying. Try no experiment, it's a super safe place and people are very charismatic.
Have a great time here! If you need anything else just ask ;)
Hope it helps!
you are probably going to be in old san juan, so I would suggest you get some local food:
Raices: located in front of the multi-level parking lot.highly recommended
El Jibarito- good local food, good prices
Barrachina- local food, also its the Place where the Piña Colada was invented, highly recommended
Dragonfly
el hamburger- good old fashion puertorican made hamburgers, nice enviroment, its located close to the luis munoz rivera park.
those are my top five choices in old san juan, if you were going to another place, i would suggest another ones, but i think these 5 will help you make your choice
