Gospel
Mk 9:38-43, 45, 47-48
At that time, John said to Jesus,
"Teacher, we saw someone driving out demons in your name,
and we tried to prevent him because he does not follow us."
Jesus replied, "Do not prevent him.
There is no one who performs a mighty deed in my name
who can at the same time speak ill of me.
For whoever is not against us is for us.
Anyone who gives you a cup of water to drink
because you belong to Christ,
amen, I say to you, will surely not lose his reward.
"Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin,
it would be better for him if a great millstone
were put around his neck
and he were thrown into the sea.
If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off.
It is better for you to enter into life maimed
than with two hands to go into Gehenna,
into the unquenchable fire.
And if your foot causes you to sin, cut if off.
It is better for you to enter into life crippled
than with two feet to be thrown into Gehenna.
And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out.
Better for you to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye
than with two eyes to be thrown into Gehenna,
where 'their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched.'"

Well, in the first part, it speaks to me as saying that differences in the ways of worship is not to be shunned, as long as the worshipers believe in God and Jesus as their Savior and do good to their fellow man.
In the second part Jesus is speaking about Gehenna, a garbage dump near Jerusalem where the fire always burns, and how not to be thrown in there. Gehenna was once called the sons of the valley of Hinnom where sons and daughters were passed through the fire to Molech, a pagan god. He is telling those who are listening that that stealing, violence, sin and lust are punishable by death, and after they were punished they would be cast into this dump, as this is what they did with dead criminals. he was telling them that to avoid this, it is better to stop your criminal acts and to cripple ( your sinful desires ), and live a life in honor, assuring a life in His Kingdom. This dump is where the worm never dies and the fire is not quenched, because many of the dead did not land directly in the fire and were eaten into by worms before the fire reached them. Entering into the Kingdom of God without stealing, violence, sin, and lust is better than entering, being maimed, crippled, and with one eye ( sinful life ).
The one referring to the little ones means that to cause a child to hate God, and to teach them sin is an abhorrence to Him......Jesus always spoke in parables (figures of speech), and the dialect of speech was very colorful during during the life of Jesus on earth. We today use colorful speech which has a truer meaning such as, get real, whatever, cut it out, jump off a cliff, you want a knuckle sandwich?, etc., etc.
