My parents are divorced and I go to my dad's ever Friday night (around 11pm) and come home Sunday morning (at noon). I just bought a fancy dwarf hamster earlier today and this Friday my mom will be out of town (she leaves every other weekend to see her boyfriend). Is it going to be okay to take my hamster with me every other weekend?
My friend's hamster traveled with her from NY to PA and NY to Florida and lived for 2 years. But this would be more traveling than that.
Also, my dad's house is a 20 minute drive.
What do you think? Tips? Suggestions?
Thanks xx

It should be fine, but make sure the car doesn't get too hot or too cold.
Make sure the carrier is a good size and put in some used bedding so it smells familiar.
Hi I had a dwarf hamster and the little guy ran so fast I never once got to hold him in the 3 years I had him.
First a dwarf hamster or a regular hamster doesn't need a "large critter carrier" he will slip right out the bars and be gone.
Just take your hamster cage (I would set it in a cardboard box just to prevent the top opening on you or some other accident) if it is cold and nasty cover the top till you are in the warm car. He can live just fine traveling back and forth.
Feed him good food and not the green pellets that are advertised as a complete diet.
I give my hamsters people food plus a bowl of seeds. They get a spoon of cooked cereal every morning, usually oatmeal. During the day I give them a bit of fruit that I eat, apple, oranges (Yup they like oranges) grapes, banana well pretty much anything. Mine have always loved watermelon and other melons.
At the evening meal they get some potato, veggie and meat, chicken or fish.
I try to not give them onion or garlic.
I recently read that even small bits of cauliflower and broccoli are ok. I tried it and he downed it like a chocolate candy bar. lol
Have fun and I do hope he lets you handle him.
I have had hamsters since 1975 and most often they live to be 3 years old and they have all been hand trained.
It will be just fine, especially if it becomes a routine.
Get a hamster carrier and stuff it with plenty of bedding so your hammy can bury itself if it feels stressed. Keep the carrier covered in a small, light, breathable sheet of some sort so the view of the "outside world" doesn't terrify it to death.
Every time it goes in the carrier it should get a special treat that in ONLY gets while in the carrier. Such as a yummy fruit, a small piece of cheese, a piece of gram cracker, some yogurt, or whatever it prefers the most. This will build a positive association with the carrier- making the trip less stressful every time it is taken.
buy a large critter keeper, put aspen in the bottom. Put a small water bowl and some food and take it with you. It will be fine for travel on those days and can live in there as long as it has fresh food and water on the days you're are gone. Keep it in an appropriate hamster cage on days you are at home.
i think it would be fine because i used to travel with my hamster and as long as the cage is not too big just sit in the back seat and hold onto the cage so it doesn't fall over!
