I know it doesn't make much sense (I mean, RAVENclaw), but the house symbol is in fact an Eagle.
This doesn't quite suit as well as a raven. Ravens are also very smart birds, and really work together in very intelligent ways to solve problems.
Still my fave house, though ;)
(check the etymology part of the referred page for info :))
Ravenclaw Animal
The Ravenclaw animal has always been an eagle in the books, but in the films it is depicted as a raven. So to say that the animal is a raven is not entirely incorrect. It just depends which canon you are going by.
People assume that the symbol of Ravenclaw should be a raven, but by that logic, the symbol of Gryffindor should be a griffin. As you probably know, it's not a griffin, it's a lion.
Ravenclaw is the surname of the founder, and the eagle was her symble. The two aren't necessarily dependent on each other.
I don't know exactly why the symbol is an eagle. Perhaps some information about this will be released on Pottermore.

It would make sense for it to be a raven based on the house's name, but it's actually an eagle. Perhaps because eagles can symbolize skill, vision, and inspiration. Also, Ravenclaw house's element is air and it has similar symbolic meaning (not to mention birds fly). In addition to this, the eagle was historically a symbol given to those of ingenuity and distinction.
Yes and no ... Ravenclaw was named after Rowena Ravenclaw, not after an actual Raven's Claw. So, it can be an eagle. Hufflepuff, after all, is a badger. That being said, I would think it should be Raven.
