A 400kV line is carrying 1GW of power and experiences a line resistance of 5Ω. What is the power lost in the cable due to resistive losses?
Not sure if this is 3-phase or single. Will assume single phase, because you haven't given enough for 3-phase, but at that power it must be 3-phase.
P = V_T I
I = P / V_T = 1GW / 400kV = 2.5kA
P_line = I² R_line = (2.5kA)² * 5Ω = 31.25MW Ans...
% power loss = 31.25MW / 1GW *100% = 3.125%
