Probably the only crime of brutality Cortez could be convicted of involves whatever torture was actually used on Montezuma while he was in captivity by the Spaniards, and the breach of trust involved in taking him [Montezuma] into captivity.
Everything else Cortez did probably qualified as the 'industry standard' of the times. Even those probably do, but they might be judged harshly by hindsight. Certainly Montezuma wouldn't have hesitated to use similar methods and tactics had the situation been reversed.
Attempting to try figures of history by 20th-21st century standards of behavior is a meaningless exercize of fantasy and self-aggrandizement. What Cortez did was tame compared to many actions of world leaders during the 19th and 20th Centuries.
i liked cortez. well, let me clarify. of all the spanish conquerors, he was the least offensive. he took an aztec wife (some claim mistress), his men followed him without too much dissent (unlike colombus and his not-too-merry men), came, saw and conquered the aztec empire. he didn't force christianity down the natives' throats (later priests did that, post cortez time. i know, i know. what happened to the natives during this time line was most brutal and in some cases, maybe most cases, could've been handled better. kinda' like blaming the victims but the aztecs were brutal neighbors to have around. what they didn't kill they enslaved. when cortez arrived, the empire was in a state of flux and involved in a nasty civil war . i truly believe that if cortez and friends came at any other time? total war with the spanish picking arrows out of their butts as they advanced to the rear. however, it wasn't to be and the rest, as they say, is history. pizzaro and those who followed up in 'discovery' were the real turds. oh, and you'll love this, bernal diaz, cortez right-hand man, wrote a book, the diaries of bernal diaz. i read it years ago and was spellbound. now diaz might've been full of **it and over inflated his importance. he does get overly dramatic at some points but the story this guy tells is a page-turner. keep in mind that diaz lived till his mid-70s. he wrote this book while in jail when in his late 60s so memory gets faulty at that point, however, read, digest and enjoy. cortez? diaz puts this guy in black, white and in grey terms. who knows better than the guy or gal who lives or works with the boss. diaz did both. check it out. it will help - truly!
The horrible brutal things were "like" conquering stuff and all.
Wikipedia is where you go first. He's in there. It doesn't hurt to really study.
You're in AP and refuse to read the textbook or Wikipedia.
That's rich.
Ok as I know he didnt care about the natives Mexicans and he treated them with disrespect and cruelty( like all the conquerors).
He killed millions of the natives ,seized the Emperor Montezouma and forced him to do things in order to control hies people. He destroyed many cities, burned them completely and left only ruins and slaughtered their residents (among them women, children and peaceful peasants).Nevertheless I think he acted as every conqueror that goes and conquers a foreign nation.Despite these things he was a great man and a skillful-brilliant general
