Is there nothing cheaper in Manila/area then $30/night in Manila or area? For a third world country there has to be something other than hostels.
I am going to be there for 20 days in January and am shocked that I can't find something.
Update:Has anyone stayed at the Windsor Inn, In Sampaloc, Manila.... it appears to be OK, cheap, but clean...

You can find something cheaper than $30 a night but it will not be easy. There will be plenty of places less than $30 but most Westerners would not stay in them. There are a few that are clean and okay. The reason the rates are so high is that their is not enough rooms on the market. There is a shortage in the Philippines of hotel rooms. The government is trying to address the issue now by encouraging foreign investments in hotels, but most foreign investors prefer countries where they can own the property and business 100 percent and not 40 percent as in the Philippines. The Philippines is known to have the highest room rate of any country in Asia. I would strongly suggest you have a room before coming to the Philippines. You can find something on the Internet.
Try the Paco Park Oasis in Paco. I think there are rooms for under $30 - although the dollar is constantly weakening, so the dollar price will be getting higher. There are also a bunch of place in Ermita / Malate for around $25. Try Malate Pensionne, Cherry Blossoms, Pensionne Natividad, Isaya Hotel, Duck Inn, Amazonia, and a few others.
$30 is pretty cheap for a room. If you are stying in one place for 20 days I'm sure they will give you a deal for maybe even less than $20/night.
I can recommend you Las Palmas hotel. its in Manila and very accessible to malls, restaurants, bars. The rate is P1,700.00 per night per room (single or double occupancy). for further assistance and reservation, pls coordinate at [email protected] im travel agent in Manila.
