They need to claim a superior intellect in order to squash debate. If they permit debate they are caught trying to defend insane positions (e.g. "we're in a recession, let's tax our way out of it..."). If, on the other hand, you can deal with those debates by claiming that you are smarter and that your opponent is just too stupid to understand your position you can avoid having to defend your idiotic statements.

Obama graduated Magna Cuum Laude from Harvard University. McCain graduate at the main bottom of his class in the Naval academy. Bush graduated with a "C" average from Yale. Sounds like obama has superior intellect to me. Nuff said!

They can't. The reason many liberals take the positions that they do, is that they are not thinking, they are feeling. Have you noticed that? Everything is about emotion with them and that is why they take up these irrational positions like supporting socialism and unrestrained immigration. Look at anyone who makes decisions based on strong emotional feelings. For example, you have people who decide to commit suicide because of strong feelings of depression. You have the men who commit murder out of strong feelings of jealousy or hate when they catch their wives cheating. You have criminals who commit crimes of theft out of strong feelings of need or want. Granted, these are all examples of people who have made irrational decisions due to emotions, which we normally consider negative, but it is possible to make the same irrational decisions because of positive emotions and that is where many liberals make their mistake.
