when i try doing it this way: 5)99, i only get a remainder. I tried dividing 99 by 5 on my calculator and i got 19.8 but how can i do it by hand in a way to get the answer as 19.8?
First try to round off 99 to 100 and then divide by 5 and you get an answer of exactly 20...That way you know that your calculator answer is correct.
To do the problem by hand, or using long division, you'll have to add two zeros after the 5 as decimal place holders. In other words, 5 becomes 5.00
Then, proceed to divide 99 by 500 using long division and you will get an answer = .198; Adjust the decimal point by shifting it to the right two decimal places as you did to the 5, and you get the answer your calculator got which is 19.8

99 isnt divisible by 5 so... using long division you can divide 5 by 9 and get 1r4
drop the four and you divide 5 into 49 which is 9r4
now you have 19 with four left. take the four, add a zero, and divide 5 into 40. you get eight
BUT, since you divided by a remainder, the 8 goes after the decimal point
hope this helps

99/5 = 19 and 4/5
after that it is just simple decimals... if you cant figure out what it is, multiply the entire fraction so that the bottom number equals 10
(4/5)*2 = (8/10)
and that 8/10 = .8
(1/10 = .1, 2/10 = .2 and so on)
hope this helps!
