I went to portugal a few mounths ago to visit family and i speack almoust no portugeuse what so ever and half way druing my visit i decided to go into town and get some things at a store. when I got into the store then man behinde the counter said bounne attard senou(good afternoon sir) and i didnt speak portugeuse so i just decided to ask him in english. so i said'do you sell the 2 litre botles of pepsi? and without missing a beat he says yeah there right there behinde you under the milk. and he spoke it with almoust no accent and he told me that since the 1950's its mandatory to learn english in schools. and i was in a part of portugal that was a small island way of the coast. so if they know english there they will know it it many other places and even if they dont know english they will probabley be able to say general things
