We made god, There's been an evolution of religion and though over the years, we used to worship the elements the earth, then we went a step further and assigned different gods that just happened to look like us or other creatures, to the point that today most of us have one big meta god, a guy who made everything, definitely makes it easier to worship rather than going to one temple for a sun god and another for the moon, The more we believe in him the more power he has.If you want to go further into the origins you'd have to look into the origins of myth and religion, ya know the stuff about human's looking for purpose and answer so some creative people made stuff up that made sense at the time to explain it, It tends to evolve side by side with science as we discover new things to explain things but it seems people are stubborn now adays, the evolution of religion and gods have come to an abrupt stop, no the only explanations we have are "god works in mysterious ways" and "god created everything, he has a plan" if you ask me its a regression rather than evolution seeing as all of a sudden things have gotten so vague.
edit: on 2nd thought the evolution of religion has come to a stop because of the creation and rise to power of organizations/communities that keep the religion static, unchanged the greatest example would be the all powerful catholic church. Organizations like these pretty much imprint their beliefs on you from extremely early on. Instead of letting them figure it out for themselves, if you were to ask me I'd say we'd have completely different religions now if over 1000 years ago the church and such didnt exist to keep things the way they are
Some random person created God because they weren't doing well and they thought creating a invisble being that was all mighty and powerful would be the best thing in the world and he knew that people would believe if he showed them the bible....but other backgrounds had all mighty gods that they worshiped so they would have some sort of power to themselves.
God wasn't created he was alive before time and before matter and anything else. he is the alpha and the omega. It is a prospect that is too hard for mere humans to wrap their mind around.
People who lacked the education and intelligence to find answers to their most important questions - and, who also wanted to control the people who were even more stupid than they were.

The Israelites. They 'borrowed' a warrior-god from Midian and then imposed new attributes from the Canaanite pantheon which they assimilated.
The best way to understand it is to imagine the Israelites as Borg (from StarTrek)
When civilizations conquered each other they assimilated the others culture. This included their religion.
That's why Yahweh has strikingly similar attributes to Canaanite deities.
This is known as an Infinite regress.
It can be used to refute the inane claims of some that all creations (be it life, planet earth or the universe) need a creator
Begotten. Just like A-10 fighter planes.
