I read a long time ago that during the time of Alexander the Great, racism did not exist, and that the people only differentiated themselves according to town and not according to race. After reading that, I started researching other cultures from that time period, and sure enough, they also did not differentiate by race. So when did racism start? How did it come about?

When racial classification was created.
The modern one used in the western society especially ''black'' & ''white'' came about during the Atlantic slave trade, slavery in the Americas and European colonization around the world. The height of it was during the 19th century where there was scientific racism applied to claim these were biological classifications.
Prior to that humans saw their identity on ethnic/cultural & tribal identities not so much skin tone and facial features.

I read a long time ago that during the time of Alexander the Great, racism did not exist, and that the people only differentiated themselves according to town and not according to race. After reading that, I started researching other cultures from that time period, and sure enough, they also did...
"So when did racism start?"
It may have started around the beginnings of the Atlantic Slave trade.
Many of the European nations who were involved in the slave trade felt bad for the atrocities (If you do your research, you will find that there were many anti-slavery movements in Europe during the 1600s) that were occurring when it came to handling African slaves, so they had to make up excuses for why the slaves had to be treated in such horrible ways, because they were receiving a ton of valuable resources for slaves. So, they created the various ideas of 'Black' inferiority and how 'Black' people were similar to animals. Through time, these ideas developed and their guilt diminished.
People probably started noticing a difference in other populations... then it started catching on and thus discrimination formed...
Yes, it is BS. You could just as easily discriminate against a certain eye color or hair color too; both have to do with ancestry.
White people. Specifically Brits when they expanded their empire. They saw anglos as the superior race and everybody else as inferior.
I doubt Genghis Khan, when the Mongols expanded westward, saw things in terms of race.
I truly believe it's whites.
It started when people realized that some people are just plain better than other people
