I'm not hot on the theory, but I always try to lead depending on the style. I would definately learn the entire scale that you're working on to minimise any mistakes or to pick up when you do learn them.
Edit: watch a few videos on youtube or something.. if you practise you can make some incredible sounds. I swear to god one of my friends is like steve vai.
You groove with it! run up and down your scales, if you know them. Go back and forth on higher frets....it works if you know the notes, then you can match, but yeah...groove with it and you might get the desired effect

hammer-ons, pull-offs, palm mutes.
most guitar solos are just lots of pentatonic scale work...i have tried it myself and can play along with most solos keeping my hand fairly steady.
