I've always wondered how, if you need a backup contraceptive when you miss 2 pills in the regular cycle, you don't need one when you go on placebos in the pack? Does anyone know?
Update:OK, the title question was misleading, but I couldn't think of a way to summarize my real question. I know that placebos don't work. that's why they're placebos. I was asking why it's safe to go off birth control at that time, but not in the middle of the pack.

The sugar pills (placebos) are there to keep you reminded of taking your pill every day. That is their only purpose.
If you took the other three weeks' of pills exactly as you should, you won't get pregnant.
The pill works by tricking your body into thinking you're pregnant for 3 weeks.
When the hormones stop and you have your period, your body has to wait at least 2 weeks to get ready to ovulate; so you're not going to ovulate during that one week with no hormones.
So, no ovulation, no pregnancy. Get it?
