Texting on a Tracfone is no different than any other phone. Just take the person's phone number and use that to send them a message. If the person is in your phone book you should just be able to go to the phone book, click options when you've highlighted the person you want, and choose New Message or whatever it says.
Each message is 0.3 units and most phones nowadays subtract 0.3 units for every sent AND received text. If you don't text a lot texting is cheaper than making phone calls. If you have friends who often send you unimportant messages (like "lol" and "ok") and you don't want to have to pay for them just exit out of the new text message notification and go to your text message inbox. At least on my phone it shows a "preview" of the text and if all I see is "ok" and I doubt there is going to be more I don't read it and then I don't get charged for my friend wasting my time.

Same way as a regular phone. But it does take a unit away (or actually a fraction of a unit, if I remember correctly).
