A friend just bought a home, and some of my friends and I helped him clean it up before he moved in entirely. Most of the clean up was all right, but the kitchen was a bit more work.
On the wooden cabinets, there's a lot of greasy residue. We tried using Dawn dish detergent, 409 sprays, sponges, Pinesol - but none of these things really worked. There would still be some sticky stuff leftover. It got frustrating, as you could imagine.
Do you have any suggestions?

Soap, really hot water and a scrubbing cloth should remove it with some elbow grease. However, it sounds like it may have been there quite a while.
You need a solvent.
There are sprays to remove sticky residue. You can probably find in a hardware shop or supermarket. Hospitals also use to remove the sticky residue from bandages on skin.
If you can't find one, use cigarette lighter fluid. You can buy it in a tin from the tobacconists. Excellent for removing black mechanics grease from carpet btw.
Mineral spirits will work. Try on a hidden spot first to make sure that it doesn't damage the finish. It shouldn't as it is not an aggressive solvent, but it is best to be sure.
Try Vim cream cleanser. Or Mr Clean magic eraser. Those things work on pretty much everything.
