This question has been asked many times, I'm aware of that. But I'm asking again because every time its asked there is a new set of answers.
Incase your unfamiliar with this topic, designer babies (formally called genetically engineered babies) are babies who are created in petri dishes with the parents sperm and egg. Several eggs are taken and fertilized, and then doctors examine what they will turn out to be if implanted and given birth to. This was first started to eliminate eggs that appeared to cary genes for autism, Tuberculous, Cystic Fibrosis, and other diseases. However, eventually couples who wanted a certain gender of a child were able to have only the healthy eggs with the gender of their choice implanted into the mother to guarantee which sex of child they desire. Technology is capable of taking it even farther by being able to tell what physical features the potential babies will have, such as hair and eye color.
I personally am on the fence about this. I completely one hundred percent support the cause this was originally created for, to eliminate fatal diseases. but I can't make up my mind about the cosmetic part of it. My personal opinion is that the gender choice should be limited to couples who already have two children of the same gender and want to have a third baby of the other gender. But I don't think anyone should be able to pick out an egg based on features such as blue eyes, straight teeth, etc. I fell this way because if it were up to the parents to chose, there would be an overwhelming increase of tall, blonde haired, blue eyed buys, because that is what many people desire. With every generation racism has become less of an issue, but if the next generation is full of designer babies, we will see an increase of racism, and one gender (probably male) could greatly outnumber the other. However, I am very young and not even thinking about marriage, let alone reproducing. So will I change my mind about this in 10 or 15 years if my future wife is dead set on our children looking a certain way? I don't know.
Whats your opinion?
Update:I meant to say tall, blonde haired, blue eyed BOYS, not tall, blonde haired, blue eyed buys. And you don't have to agree with me for me to give you the best answer. I'll give it to the person who states most accurately WHY the feel the way they do, even if it is exactly the opposite of what I said.

To stop diseases, save another childs life or anything with health benefits etc, or just to help those who can't conceive i have no problem with (i also don't care about cloned cows milk, GM food etc). Doing it so they look a certain way, or act a certain way, or so they're a certain sex (unless you have an history of gender related illnesses like lowe syndrome) Is just plain wrong and shouldn't be allowed. What does it matter if your childs a boy or girl, has green eye's or blue, blonde hair or red? as long as it's healthy thats all that should count.
To me they are over-priced blended breeds yet on an identical time i be attentive to those that very own them and are very thrilled. merely like i'm very pleased with my 3 rescued blended breed canines that I have been given from shelters. I paid plenty much less for mine and that they have got been an infinite source of enjoyment. they are my fur toddlers. lol on combination names. I cherished the "Bull Schnitt".
