I put in the user I.D. and password. Then I get my name with the @ after it and something that looks like a dollar sign ( $ ). But that's as far as it goes. What do I do next?
That's the prompt. You're logged in. The equivalent of the C: drive on the old MS-DOS. I'm sorry, I forgot what the proper script is but either you don't have X windows on your system or it's just not going to boot up automatically. Type "startx" and see what happens. If nothing log out, log in as root, and type "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg." If that doesn't work dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86" and, assuming you're configured to download from the internet, "apt-get update" "apt-get install x-windows-system" and the desktop of your choice (i.e. kde, gnome, xfce4 or fluxbox to name four) after x-windows-system.
