Are you sure you mean an Intranet, or are you referring to a LAN connection to hook up a few computers on one network?
A local intranet is what companies use to host there on private websites to provide the employees with company information, and materail shared on a network. To do this properly you really would need a server, and that is way beyong the scope of any answer here. While technically you can set up an intranet with just a network of connected Windows comptuers using the tools which come with Windows XP Professional, it is way too difficult and unwieldy in practice. The best use is with a server.
If you are attempting to set up a network, then get this book: "Absolute Beginner's Guide to Home Networking", by Mark Edward Soper. The book is a bit over 300 pages, filled with well writted information and instructions on setting up wired, wireless and mixed networks, at the home or office which do not use a server. It is a treasure trove of a book and a great reference for any troubleshooting. It is the basic first book anyone setting up a network for the first time, or even those with moderate knowlege.
Good luck and much success in whatever it is you are attempting to do.
