I grew up in an openly racist community. I recently spent a few years exploring the outside world, which i was born in by the way. I do/say racist things without even realizing it...what should i do?
Racisum is taught. And you are making the first step to want to change. You are admitting that you are and you want to change. To which I applaud you. When you speak, think about what you are going to say first. If it sounds racist to you, then don't say it. You can also go into a more cultuarlly rich area, and try to make some friends. Talk it out with people. There are a lot of people who are more understanding than you would think about things like this. Just be up front with people who are of a different race than you. Just be like "Hey this is where I'm from and this is what I learned. I know this isn't right, and I want to change." Most of the time, they will be courteuos about it, and try to help you over come any obsteacals you might have.
Another thing you can do is change your perceptions of people first. Judge them FIRST as a person, not by the color of their skin. (This also goes for not judging people by religion, creed, natinality, or sexual prefence). If you teach your self to believe that there is only ONE major race (The HUMAN RACE) it then becomes easier to learn that skin color doesn't matter.
I'm not saying you shouldn't recognize a person's skin color because that in itself is denying them their heritage. I'm just saying it should come second to veiwing them as human first.
I think to some point we are always going to be some what racist. However, each individual has to want to be open minded and tolerable of others and diversity. Think about it...there are some children who have managed to make the decision to accept others no matter what color, race, creed or religion, even after having racist parents who pumped hate into them all their life. It's a choice. Racism...and hatred...it's simply a choice.
Get some Ribonucleic acid from another human being who isn't racist (which is impossible) and exchange it with yours. IT's IMPOSSIBLE.
It's in our genetic make up to hound at things we are unfamiliar with. Of course if you were say, Mexican, you'd be a Mexican patriot, not a Greek, Arab, or w/e it may be.
Just go with the flow and try to keep things to your self because you can't stop a train that has already been going.
I think we all do that sometimes. I am not racist but sometimes say things about others and it sounds racist sometimes. I don't know how would you or I control that. We all do it though. it doesn't make it ok but we still do.

Live in a racially diverse city, to get used to the different types of people.
Say them to the groups you're being racist towards, that'll teach you.
get used to 'free and open' mind and thoughts of non-racist people everyday.
otherwise, you probably won't have a decent conversation without insults
By going to yahoo everyday.
Think to your self, "would I want someone to say that about me or my race?" before you say something.
