Depends on the brand and how you take care of it. Remove dust, change the fan, clean the screen, and shut down and restart right, dont download junk or visit sites that offer pops ups and viruses, you should be good for 4-6 years. I went from pc to mac, and i have not had a single problem for 5 years.
We have computers here that have been running 24/7/365 (except for a couple of days when the company moved) for over 10 years. We expect them to run at least another 10 years. (For what they do, they're fast and powerful enough.)
How long will you want to keep the average home computer? Probably not more than 3 years. Programs get larger, requiring larger and faster computers to run them. If you're content running Microsoft Office 97, you can run a 10 year old computer with Windows 2000. But if you want to run current programs, even a 5 year old Windows XP computer is getting a bit too old.
